Our Natural World

Plants & Ecology

From the air, Idube lodge looks like a forest amidst the savannah. Louis Marais, one of the owners, planted many trees when the lodge was first purchased, one of which, after 40 years, is 28m high!

The lawns are also always green due to constant watering with recycled water. Beyond the lodge, we are trying to find ways of minimising the damage to trees caused by elephants. We manage the bush as best we can with minimal human interference, with occasional burns to remove the build-up of moribund material. Our freshly cut clearings are ecologically maintained and attract a host of predators and their prey in a delicate balance.

Make sure to take time to look at the interesting plants, flowers and little creatures that form part of our diverse and rich ecology.
